The Jonesboro Economical Transit System is working on its development plan over the next three to five years. As Congress leaves to start the August recess, one key piece of legislation that has not been finalized is a Farm Bill. The U.S. House and Senate both passed separate versions of a Farm Bill. The House broke a 40 year tradition and removed SNAP funding, commonly referred to as food stamps, from their version of the legislation. In this interview with KASU's Mark Smith, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack blasts the House for not getting its work done and separating the SNAP program from the rest of the Farm Bill.
A collaboration between Arkansas State University and MFA Oil Biomass means biofuel production is taking place in northeast Arkansas. The source of the fuel is a species of Asian grass called miscanthus. It is a sterile hybrid, non-invasive plant that has been used for biofuel production in Europe. Debate continues in Arkansas over a designation of the White River as a National Blueway. Federal officials say it is a voluntary program that is locally led. Work is expected to start soon on clearing the Cache River. Since the 1940's, silt, logs, and other forms of debris have clogged the Cache River in Jackson County near Grubbs.
