Craighead County's lawyers reviewing law concerning crosses

The Craighead County Assessor’s office has received a second notice from a Wisconsin-based group concerning crosses in her office.  Tax Assessor Hannah Towell has been asked from the Freedom from Religion Foundation to take down religious symbols that they claim is in plain sight.  This is the second time they have made such a request.  The organization is threatening legal action if the symbols are not taken down.  The Craighead County Quorum Court has pledged its support for Towell, but Craighead County Judge Ed Hill tells KASU news he has lawyers looking at the complaint and the law to see what the next move is.

“We are in contact with people who represent the county on issues like this to see which way they are leaning.  We will follow state law, whether we like it or not.  Once we determine what the law is, we will go from there.  We are sure there would be a group that would represent us, but we don’t want to spend taxpayer dollars on a frivolous lawsuit.  We will see which way the lawyers suggest we should go.”

Ed Hill says he is not sure when he will get an answer from those lawyers, but he does say it will likely be sometime early next year.
