The Arkansas Agriculture Department’s Forestry Commission (AFC) has suppressed 103 wildfires that burned 1,805 acres in the last four days, and now, 59 of 75 Arkansas counties are under high wildfire danger. Current drought conditions and weather forecasts for low humidity and gusty winds will create elevated wildfire danger across Arkansas through this week.

Doniphan Vitality, a non-profit organization, has received a $100,000 grant from the Delta Regional Authority, DRA, to conduct an innovation hub feasibility study in four southern Missouri counties and Sharp and Randolph counties in Arkansas.

The University of Missouri Extension Office has also pledged a $20,000 match, DV Arkansas leadership point person Graycen Bigger told Talk Business & Politics.

Red Flag Fire Warning Issed for Several NEA Counties

  The National Weather Service has issued Red Flag fire warnings for parts of  Eastern Arkansas in the KASU listening area.

The warning is in effect from late Thursday morning until  7pm tonight.  Counties included in the warning are Baxter, Stone, Fulton, Sharp, Izard, Independence, & Cleburne.

The Associated Press reports the weather services says grass, vegetation, and wood in these areas will be very dry due to a very low humidity.  Mixed with strong winds of up to 45 mph, fires outdoors have the potential to spread quickly.

 One local organization is actively looking for volunteers to tackle the overcrowded foster care system in the state.

Member station KUAR reported Thursday Arkansas has a high recidivism rate of 48% and over 1,00 foster care children in need of a home.  Arkansas’ foster care issue is also having a huge effect on a Northeast Arkansas organization who works often with children in the system.
