The city of Walnut Ridge is the only city in Arkansas where the Beatles ever set foot during their touring days as a band, and seven years ago Mayor Charles Snapp and a group of civic leaders wanted to commemorate the event with a festival. This year, it struck gold.

The second annual Northeast Arkansas Komen Race for the Cure this year will focus more on taking action than being aware.  


Several road improvement projects totaling over $3.2 million are expected to begin in the next 2 to 4 weeks in Northeast Arkansas. 

In news releases Thursday from the Arkansas Department of Transportation, crews will be working in Craighead, Greene, Lawrence, and Mississippi counties.  In Jonesboro, 2.5 miles of U.S. Highway 63B and State Highway 463 from Watt St. to Ingles Road will be resurfaced. 

State Highway 135 will have 3.1 miles resurfaced in Greene County beginning at the Craighead County line and moving northbound.

JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) — The board of trustees for Arkansas State University is considering plans to build facilities in Imboden and Walnut Ridge for use in a disaster preparedness training program.

The board meets Friday and will consider long-term lease agreements between the university and the two cities. The Jonesboro Sun reports that the proposed facilities would allow university students and local emergency personnel to practice simulations of emergency situations.

That's the only way Kary Story, Mayor of Pocahontas, can describe the record flooding coming to his city.  The National Weather Service in Memphis on Tuesday issued a Flash Flood Warning for southeastern Randolph County, and central Lawrence County.


After months of study, the Walnut Ridge Mayor says consolidating with Hoxie "MUST wait."


After recently consolidating with College City, Walnut Ridge officials are seeking to merge with Hoxie for 2017.

KAIT reports Walnut Ridge Mayor Charles Snapp expressed hope in bringing the two cities together in his State of the City address to the city council Monday night.


Walnut Ridge and Corning are among Arkansas's top 20 safest cities.

In an annual report released Tuesday on Safewise.com, Corning was ranked number 14 with about 4 violent crimes per 1,000 residents and around 17 property crimes per 1,000 residents.

Walnut Ridge came in at number 16 with 3 violent crimes per 1,000 residents and nearly 20 property crimes per 1,000 residents.

Lawrence County Democrats have nominated a successor for the late Judge Dale Freeman. 

In a special election held on Thursday, John Thomison defeated Mary Freeman in a race to become county judge.  Dale Freeman, who was the late husband of Mary Freeman, passed away Saturday and was currently serving as county judge.

After the passing of Lawrence County Judge Dale Freeman, officials will begin a search for a Democratic candidate to finish his term.

The 75 year old judge was elected as county judge in 2010.  Freeman was serving as county judge at the time of his passing and was running for reelection on the November ballot.  Thursday, Lawrence county Democrats will convene to nominate a candidate to finish Freeman’s term.

The Walnut Ridge City Council had plenty of items to address during the meeting Monday, including a lawsuit, the passage of a new fire fee, and a letter demanding that the Mayor and the Water Works Superintendent resign from office.

A Lawrence County Judge who was seriously injured in a vehicle accident in central Arkansas has died over the weekend.  


Pool hall owner Jack Allison saw a peculiar aircraft in flight over his hometown late night Sept. 18, 1964. It was large, and as he spied it from the pool hall parking lot, it was clear to him the plane was headed to the Walnut Ridge Airport.

Allison instructed three teenage boys to investigate it. When they arrived at the runway, the plane door opened and immortals strolled onto the tarmac. It was the only time the Beatles – George, John, Paul, and Ringo – ever set foot in the Natural State as a group.
