Arkansas State University’s System President says a lot of lessons have been learned after two internal audits led to the resignation of former Chancellor Dr. Tim Hudson.  Dr. Chuck Welch addressed faculty and talked about the situation for almost 20 minutes.  He says universities are not required to do internal audits, but after receiving a tip in March, he says auditors began their investigation.

Bob Simpson, a fixture on the arts scene at Arkansas State for the past 34 years, has elected to step down from full-time duties and retire from the university.

Simpson, a faculty member in the Department of Theatre since 1983, was technical director and director of theatre before becoming department chair. For the past two years, he also served as director of Fowler Center, and most recently arranged for the current season of concerts that begin in October.

120 students in white doctor coats stood proudly on the Riceland Hall stage in the Fowler Center, reciting the “student pledge of commitment” with the goal of accomplishing a dream.  A dream to practice medicine.

The students are the culmination of a dream for a medical school to be in Northeast Arkansas at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro.  They are the inaugural class of the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine at A-State—the first Osteopathic Medical school in the state.

Former Arkansas State University Chancellor Dr. Tim Hudson who resigned Wednesday is also the subject of a second internal audit.

Obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request by KAIT, the document included email exchanges between Hudson and a partner for the ASU-Jonesboro campus with an unknown family member’s resume attached.

Glen Fenter, president of the Greater Memphis Alliance for a Competitive Workforce (GMACW), has a passion for workforce education in Memphis and the Arkansas Delta region. Likewise, he is passionate about job creation. Not just any jobs, mind you, but the kind necessary to upgrade living standards and grow the area’s economy.

Fenter is far from alone in his zeal, as several two-year colleges and other groups work toward this end – many in association with one another.

The names of those who lost their lives in a mass shooting in Orlando were read during a candlelight vigil at Arkansas State last night (Monday).  A light rain fell over a crowd of concerned citizens and members of Jonesboro’s LGBTQ community who mourned those who lost their lives early Sunday morning.

Arkansas joins the rest of the nation in reacting to Sunday’s shooting massacre in Orlando, FL at a Gay nightclub.  Senator John Boozman (R-AR) called the shooting a form of radical Islamic terrorism and as an “attack on our freedoms.”

He said the country should “do whatever it takes to destroy ISIS using whatever means possible to protect Americans at home and abroad.”

Here's Boozman's full official statement:

A rededication of historic Wilson Hall at Arkansas State University was a celebration of how a new osteopathic medical school will help serve the needs of those who are underserved in the Delta.  115 students have been accepted into the Class of 2020, 45 of those are from Arkansas.  There are 150 on a waiting list.  Over a ten-year period, more than 1,000 physicians are expected to be produced in Arkansas.  The public-private partnership is between the New York Institute of Technology and Arkansas State University…and Wilson Hall is the new NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine at A-State.
