Walnut Ridge City Council Discusses Fire Fee, Lawsuit, and Resignation

The Walnut Ridge City Council had plenty of items to address during the meeting Monday, including a lawsuit, the passage of a new fire fee, and a letter demanding that the Mayor and the Water Works Superintendent resign from office.

Media outlets report a letter from some residents called for Mayor Charles Snapp and Water Works Superintendent Jon Kopp to resign because of an illegal agreement made between the city and the Lawrence County School District in the 1970s.

The agreement stated that the city would pay for the school district’s water and sewer in return for the city’s purchase of the district’s property.  Snapp said that he and Kopp have been working to bring the city into compliance with state law.

The council also passed a new voluntary $5 fire fee to replace the fire protection fee that was repealed in August.  Finally, the council passed a resolution to allow the Municipal League to represent the city in a lawsuit filed by owners of a condemned property along Highway 67.
