City planners have approved a request to rezone 201 acres of land at Hilltop for residential and commercial use. The Jonesboro Metropolitan Area Planning Commission spent over an hour discussing the property, before voting unanimously to approve the request to rezone the land from R-1 single family to C-3 general commercial district. The property is called the Greensborough Village Town Center. The plan for the new area reportedly includes 200 single-family lots on the north and south sides of Greensboro road, as well as commercial development and multifamily housing. Commercial development is expected to be located closer to East Johnson Avenue. According to Talk Business & Politics, officials for the project cited the development would be great for people to work, live, and play. An additional benefit would be the close proximity the center would have to Arkansas State University. Several people reportedly opposed the project, citing traffic concerns and a lack of transparency, to the loss of trees on Greensboro Road. The plan must now go before the Jonesboro City Council for approval. The project is expected to be complete in the next seven to 10 years.
