Complaint filed against Craighead County's Tax Assessor over display of religious symbols

Craighead County, Arkansas

The Craighead County Quorum Court is supporting a county employee that has religious symbols in her office. Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation is filing a complaint against Craighead County Tax Assessor Hannah Towell due to religious crosses that she has in her office.  Towell says the crosses were hers before she became the county’s tax assessor and that she placed them in her office after she took over the position.  The resolution passed by the Craighead County Quorum Court last night states that all employees have the right to display their religious views in their workspaces.  It says that public service employees do not forfeit their constitutional rights by working in a public office.  The resolution states that employees have that right, due to the free speech and free exercise clause of the First Amendment of the United States Constitution.  The Freedom From Religion Foundation claims such a display is a violation of the First Amendment and believes in a separation of church and state.
