Authorities urge caution when school starts

With local public schools opening for the 2015-2016 school year on Monday, the Jonesboro Police Department is asking motorists to exercise extreme caution in and around school zones.

Officers will be working traffic enforcement in an effort to promote safety, and the Police Department urges motorists to be patient and pay extra attention to the traffic patterns that are established in school zones.

The Police Department will operate its trailer-mounted mobile speed monitor unit in school zones to remind motorists of the limits. Locations where it will be deployed include:

  • Wilkins Avenue near Hillcrest Drive;
  • Rains Street behind International Studies;
  • West Nettleton just east of Annie Camp;
  • In front of Philadelphia Elementary;
  • 4300 Block of Aggie Road;
  • Christian Valley Drive just east of Hwy 49 South.

Here are some additional tips to help keep children safe in school zones:

  • Slow down and obey all traffic laws and speed limits, both in school zones and in neighborhoods surrounding the school.
  • Comply with local school drop-off and pick-up procedures for the safety of all children accessing the school.
  • Prepare to stop for a school bus when overhead yellow lights are flashing. Drive with caution when you see yellow hazard warning lights are flashing on a moving or stopped bus.
  • Stop for a school bus with its red overhead lights flashing, regardless of the direction from which the driver is approaching.
  • Watch for children walking or bicycling in areas near a school.
  • Remember it is against state law for drivers to use hand-held cell phones while traveling through school zones.
