Arkansas State University's C.A.R.E. Program to open

Arkansas State University’s C.A.R.E. (Community Action Reinforcing Empowerment) organization is hosting an open house to showcase its new location.

The event is Thursday, Sept. 11, from 3-5 p.m. The new location is the Community Services Center at the Magnolia Baptist Church, 911 Magnolia Road in Jonesboro. Refreshments will be served.

“We are very excited to be moving to this new location,” said Dr. Brad Holloway, assistant professor of disaster preparedness and emergency management at Arkansas State. “This area provides big opportunities to expand services to residents of north Jonesboro.

“The Community Services Center staff will continue to operate the food pantry, clothes closet and other services, while the A-State C.A.R.E. staff will provide ongoing needs assessments, advocacy and referral, after-school tutoring, adult computer and parenting classes, and a number of other community projects and activities.

The C.A.R.E. program was created in 2010 by A-State’s Department of Social Work to focus on identifying resident needs and concerns in north Jonesboro, and to assist individuals in prioritizing their needs necessary for positive outcomes. Social work student interns staff the organization, with oversight by program faculty, and office space for the organization was originally housed at 600-A Marshall Street.

Holloway explained Arkansas State partnered with the North Jonesboro Neighborhood Initiative (NJNI) team in response to the needs and concerns of citizens over the past year. This opportunity allowed the staff at A-State C.A.R.E. to gain invaluable experience and insight into the challenges many residents in the area face on an everyday basis.

“This new chance to partner with the Community Services Center will allow even more opportunities to affect the lives of the clients we serve,” said Holloway.
