Anti-Property Maintenance Code Group Attemps to Stop Special Election Petition

Disputes over the passing of the Jonesboro Property Maintenance Code continue as one group works to gather signatures, despite the actions of another.

A spokesperson for the Committee to Repeal Property Code 105-2 told the Jonesboro Sun they believe anonymously signed letters from a code supporting group mailed to businesses has helped their cause.

The group Citizens for a Better Jonesboro sent letters in early February to businesses encouraging them to not allow code opponents to collect signatures on their property.

Late January, the Committee to Repeal Property Code 105-2 announced they would be collecting signatures for a special election to be held in early May for citizens to vote on the ordinance.

The code was narrowly passed by the Jonesboro City Council in early December and has been a source of controversy.

Opponents are against the interior requirements which they believe code enforcement officers could enter people’s homes.

Mayor Harold Perrin announcedin December  the ordinance would be enforced in March, allowing time to educate the community.
